1. What does the film say about subjectivism? And about the stories we tell to ourselves and to others?

2. What does the film say about relativism- that all versions of the truth are equally valid? Also, what does the film say about objective truth?

3. What is the film saying about rape and murder? Which is more serious in the films view? How is this portrayed?

4. What does “Rashomon” say about personal honor, dignity and the lengths humans will go to uphold that, either by lying to themselves or others?

5. The film chronicles several different accounts of a crime, but why is the film named “Rashomon”? Tearing down the gate and burning parts of it has what significance?

6. “It’s human nature to lie.” The commoner says. What does the film say about both of these, human nature and lying?

7. What does the baby, that appears at the end of the film signify?

8. “I don’t understand” the priest repeats over and over. Is it possible to know what happened in the crime?
