American Beauty is ironically described as an American Masterpiece. It’s a well-known film about family dysfunction and scandal. It explores profound psychological issues that are deeply routed in the American (Suburban) Society. The film pretty much shows the darkness that lies beneath the surface of such perfected exteriors of the white upper middle class. Like looking at the common family through a magnifying glass, it addresses subjects that are hard to confront and pretty disturbing. Kevin Spacey has a very intense performance in this film dealing with heavy thoughts about life and death. As the winner of multiple Academy Awards including Best Picture, this movie is very thought provoking and reflective. Definitely leaves a lot to be discussed.
